Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Handgun for Women

Size and Weight

There is a long-standing myth that smaller firearms are the only choice for women. That’s simply not true. Women can shoot all sizes of pistols. The most important factor when choosing a firearm is not its size but the intended use.

What do you need a gun for? Self defense? Sport shooting? Recreational purposes? Once you’ve decided, you can consider the size – it is important to choose one that fits comfortably in your hands.

Lastly, try before you buy – if possible, visit a shooting range that offers firearm rentals or seek advice from experienced shooters.

The Caliber

The suitable caliber varies based on individual strength and comfort. Popular choices for women are 9mm, .380 ACP, and .38 Special.

The trade-off between recoil and stopping power is important when selecting a caliber. A higher caliber firearm will have more stopping power but will also have more recoil, which can make it difficult to control and shoot accurately.

On the other hand, a lower caliber firearm will have less recoil, but may not have enough stopping power. A firearm with moderate recoil and stopping power is ideal for most women.

Ergonomics and Grip

A comfortable grip and ergonomic design help maintain control and accuracy while shooting. Features such as finger grooves, palm swells, and textured surfaces can enhance the grip and minimize slipping during shooting.

Additionally, adjustable grips are a great feature that can accommodate various hand sizes and provide a comfortable and secure grip.

Safety Features

Firearms with built-in safety features, such as manual safeties and trigger safety mechanisms, provide an additional layer of protection against accidental discharges.

The oldest and most common form of handgun safety is manual safety. This switch or lever, when placed in the “safe” position, prevents the firearm from firing when the trigger is pulled. Trigger safeties, on the other hand, use a small lever on the trigger itself to prevent the pistol from firing unnecessarily.

  1. This is a great article that touches on many points. As a woman who identifies as a firearm enthusiast/gunnie there is never a cookie cutter answer on what the best gun is. The best advice (as was indicated above) is finding one that “fits.” Ideally, you get to go out and actually shoot the gun you think you want prior to buying. At the very least handle and manipulate them until you find one that feels “natural.” You’ll know what fits. Go to a range where you can rent firearms and try as many as attract your attention. Weight, shape, grip ~ how you plan on carrying the firearm and your budget both in the firearm and the cost of ammo ~ all those things play a big part on what you pick. I carry a full sized Glock 17 Gen 4 in my purse. (I realize that may not be the best way to carry, but it’s what’s most comfortable for me. I’m accurate with it and I’m confident. I had to find the perfect conceal carry purse that fit that gun too and that meant more shopping at gun stores)! Despite the Glock being my chosen carry gun I love Walther handguns Guns for the size of my hands. The Creed was my first Walther, there are more… (lol). The ergonomics cannot be beat. If you’re a lady reading this, or have small hands – I love how my fingers naturally find the grooves in the grip so be sure to handle a Walther if you can. Noooo, I don’t work for Walther – but I’d love to 😉
When I decided I wanted a Harley everyone said get a Sportster it’s a woman’s bike. That couldn’t have been more wrong! My dream bike was a Police Road King – why? The center of gravity was low and my strength is in my hips/legs. The Sportster that I bought on everyone’s advice almost had me giving up on riding completely! Lesson learnt.
