Are Suppressors Worth It?

Hunters, recreational and competition shooters, military, and police all have a history of suppression use for the three main beneficial reasons:

  1. Noise reduction : a suppressor can reduce the blast sound after a shot by 15db-45db, close to the average hearing protection safety levels.
  2. Recoil reduction : a suppressor helps dissipate the gas pressure placement, creating less kick backward (also known as recoil).
  3. Improved accuracy : generally, the added weight at the end of your barrel keeps your weapon from popping up as far, keeping your aim on target.

The YHM Phantom .22 Sound Suppressor-Sound Reduction

As Chris starts with the Phantom .22 sound suppressor. “It was launched in 2022. It is a 22-caliber suppressor rated for 17 HMR, 22 MAG, and up to 5.7×28. It features stainless steel internals and aluminum external components, keeping the weight down to around four ounces. The back cap can be threaded off and used as a tool to remove the muzzle cap, making it a convenient all-in-one package. The MSRP is $385, with a street price of around $350.”

Shooting a 17 HMR or 22 mag has little recoil and not as much bang as a higher-powered rifle, but adding the Phantom sound suppressor can help reduce noise at the range for other shooters as well as your hearing, on top of wearing hearing protection. Using hearing protection isn’t always an option for those out on the job, so having a suppressor like this can greatly reduce hearing damage.

Following the discussion on a suppressor’s versatility and price, here are some more questions to ask yourself.

What other firearm accessory allows you to use it with a pistol and move it right onto a rifle like a .308 Winchester? Talk about true versatility at the range! Another benefit of twisting the R9 suppressor onto your range pistol is increased muzzle control and faster on-target repeat shots. This one weighs in at about 10 ounces. The added weight decreases the movement of the barrel and increases shot accuracy.
