  • Grade A rip off…stay away. I wanted to pay him to fit a 1911 match grade barrel into my pistol and he insisted I kept original barrel. Proceeded to shoot my pistol with original barrel then tried charging me “range time” and for his gas and for the ammo he used to fire my weapon. I never asked any of these things , he borderline was refusing to do the service I requested which was to fit my new barrel. He took my gun out on his own accord, never disclosed or had any kind of paper work stating you’d be charged for his range time or ammo used etc everything about this guy spells SCAM.

    1. So in a nut shell, he took my gun out and played with it and gave me back a dirty gun with carbon everywhere and wanted ME to pay HIM for literally shooting my gun. He didn’t do the service I asked for nor did he do anything other than shoot my gun.

    2. Hi Brian, I was informed of your review by a repeat customer who found it online. I hope you were able to find the parts you were lacking for your barrel, get your barrel installed, and the malfunctions you experienced addressed. Please find a rebuttal to your review below.

I drove to customer’s house when asked to install an aftermarket barrel in his new Springfield Ronin 10mm. Customer stated that this is the first 1911 he has owned and that he had, “only really ever fired strike-fired pistols.” Customer presented a barrel he purchased on the internet, without a link kit or matched bushing. Customer stated that he tried to ‘install’ the barrel on his own, thinking that it would ‘drop in like a Glock barrel’ (without a link pin, link, bushing, and without the link legs cut for link installation and barrel fitting).

Customer described having malfunctions in new firearm with very low round count. Told customer that malfunctions are not likely caused by the barrel, that firearms could require break-in, that magazines could be the cause, and that 1911s tend to shoot different relative to his experience with mainly striker fired pistols. Told customer that I had 10mm shop ammunition, that I would fire his weapon to try to replicate the malfunction, and that he would need additional parts if he wanted to complete the barrel installation.

Completed bench inspection upon return to the shop with no telltale signs which could cause the malfunctions reported. Went to range, fired 50 rounds of shop ammunition with no malfunctions. Upon completion of range test, chalked up report of malfunction to possible lack of familiarity with 1911 function. Informed customer that firearm functioned without issue and that he could save a lot of money (additional parts, labor, etc) if he chose not to install barrel. Informed customer that his only outlay would be $40 range fee (posted at shop that customer did not visit) and one box of ammunition fired to determine whether firearm did in fact present a consistent malfunction which could be addressed. Customer did not like that answer. Customer told me that firing the pistol was, “of my own accord.” With this I immediately told customer that I would return his firearm to him. I then drove to his town (~ 30 minutes away) and contacted customer. Customer was not home and told me to leave his firearm (in a black soft pistol case) on his front porch at this house. Told customer that leaving firearms unattended in this way is unsafe, likely illegal, and that I was required to return the firearm to the customer in accordance with the rules governing my Federal Firearms License. When customer arrived at his house, I did not present him with an invoice for the range test or ammunition. It was my preference to return the firearm to this particular customer as soon as possible and direct him to other possible gunsmith services. I then listed the parts he would need to install his barrel and recommended a business who he could reach to complete his project.

It is my assessment that the customer is unfamiliar with gunsmithing as a service. Customers who present firearms with function issues should expect gunsmiths to use bench inspection and/or live fire to diagnose the reported malfunction. This is standard practice taught at gunsmithing school. Spending customer money into parts and labor to install aftermarket parts prior to confirming, diagnosing, and addressing reported malfunctions is the quintessential example of poor business practices and worse, poor craftsmanship.

Lastly, 20 years of honorable service in the US Marines as an enlisted infantry Marine, Scout-Sniper, and Commissioned infantry Officer, full-time attendance to an in-person gunsmithing school, establishment of a registered business, and approval of a Type 07 Federal Firearms License are not commonly associated with ‘scam’ as described.

Brian, if you would like to discuss the possibility that you were scammed by TNT Gunsmithing Services, LLC, how 1911s function, or how school trained gunsmiths diagnose customer reported malfunctions, repair firearms, or install aftermarket parts, feel free to contact me directly.
